Thousands Evacuated As Wildfires Advance Towards Bordeaux
French authorities have ordered the evacuation of thousands of residents near Bordeaux after rapidly spreading wildfires, fuelled by extreme heat, drought and strong winds, advanced towards the outskirts of the city.
Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for residents in the suburbs of Le Haillan, Eysines and Mérignac, where emergency services carried out door to door operations to move people to safety. Bordeaux's Parc des Expositions exhibition centre was opened to accommodate displaced residents as smoke spread across the metropolitan area.
The wildfire, centred in the Gironde region, has already burned tens of thousands of hectares of forest and forced the evacuation of around 167,000 people by the time the latest orders were issued. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the operation as a "long and difficult battle", warning that changing winds and exceptionally dry conditions continued to threaten nearby communities.
More than 2,500 firefighters, supported by military personnel, specialist aircraft and helicopters, have been deployed in an effort to contain the blaze. Authorities said the fire has reached an unprecedented scale and, at times, has generated its own weather conditions, making firefighting operations significantly more difficult.
The crisis forms part of a wider wildfire emergency affecting southern Europe. Spain has also declared a national emergency as major fires continue to burn around Madrid, Ávila, and other regions, while additional blazes have been reported in Italy and Scotland amid prolonged heatwave conditions.
Officials have urged residents to follow evacuation instructions immediately, avoid unnecessary travel, and monitor official emergency updates as weather conditions remain highly volatile. Meteorologists warned that continued high temperatures and low humidity could further increase the risk of fire spread over the coming days.
Climate scientists say increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves are contributing to longer and more destructive wildfire seasons across Europe. Governments across the continent have mobilised additional firefighting resources while seeking assistance through European civil protection mechanisms.
