Rubio And Lavrov Hold Ukraine Talks As Europe Battles Deadly Wildfires
United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held high level talks on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Manila as global attention remained focused on the war in Ukraine, worsening wildfires across Europe, and rising tensions in the Middle East.
According to Russian state news agency TASS, Rubio and Lavrov met for more than 30 minutes to discuss issues relating to the conflict in Ukraine. The meeting marked another rare face to face engagement between senior officials from Washington and Moscow as diplomatic efforts to end the war continue.
Meanwhile, Europe continued battling devastating wildfires driven by extreme heat and prolonged drought. Two firefighters were killed while tackling a blaze near Bordeaux Airport in southwestern France, while another firefighter died after becoming ill during firefighting operations in Sicily, Italy. Officials estimate that around 200,000 hectares of land have burned across Europe since the beginning of the year.
In the Middle East, Yemen's Iran backed Houthi movement claimed responsibility for attacks on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, accusing the vessels of violating a naval blockade announced earlier this week. Saudi authorities later confirmed that one of the tankers caught fire during the incident, although they did not identify those responsible.
The United States and Saudi Arabia also announced the signing of a landmark civilian nuclear cooperation agreement. The proposed multi billion dollar partnership would allow American companies to help develop Saudi Arabia's civilian nuclear energy programme. The agreement must still receive approval from the U.S. Congress before taking effect.
Elsewhere, South Korean prosecutors have requested a one year prison sentence for the owner of a Michelin two star restaurant in Seoul after black ants were served as part of a dessert. Authorities allege the insects are not approved for human consumption under South Korean food safety regulations. The restaurant owner admitted the offence but disputed the number of ants allegedly served to customers.
The day's developments underline the wide range of challenges facing governments worldwide, from international diplomacy and regional security to climate related disasters and public health regulations, as global leaders continue responding to multiple crises simultaneously.
