Xi Jinping to Visit North Korea for First Time in Seven Years Amid Shifting Regional Alliances

08 Jun 2026 Xi Jinping to Visit North Korea for First Time in Seven Years Amid Shifting Regional Alliances

Chinese President Xi Jinping will travel to North Korea next week for a closely watched summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, marking his first visit to the country in almost seven years.

The visit highlights China's renewed efforts to reinforce its relationship with its nuclear-armed neighbour at a time of growing geopolitical uncertainty in Northeast Asia. Analysts view the trip as a strategic move by Beijing to maintain its influence over Pyongyang as North Korea expands its military cooperation with Russia and continues to advance its nuclear weapons program.

China remains North Korea’s most important economic partner and diplomatic supporter. However, recent years have seen Pyongyang strengthen ties with Moscow, raising concerns in Beijing that its traditional influence could diminish. Xi’s visit is expected to focus on reaffirming political trust, economic cooperation, and regional security coordination.

The summit comes as North Korea continues to expand its military capabilities. In recent days, Kim Jong Un has showcased new naval assets and reiterated his commitment to strengthening the country’s nuclear deterrent, signalling that denuclearization remains unlikely in the near future.

Observers believe China is seeking to prevent North Korea from drifting too far into Russia’s sphere of influence while preserving stability on the Korean Peninsula. The visit also takes place against the backdrop of broader tensions involving the United States, China, and regional allies.

Xi and Kim are expected to discuss bilateral relations, economic cooperation, and security issues during the two-day visit. The outcome of the talks could have significant implications for regional diplomacy and the balance of power in East Asia.
