WHO Declares Ebola Outbreak in Congo and Uganda a Global Health Emergency

17 May 2026 WHO Declares Ebola Outbreak in Congo and Uganda a Global Health Emergency

The World Health Organization has officially declared the Ebola outbreak affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighbouring Uganda a “public health emergency of international concern,” its highest level of global alert. Health officials say the outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, which currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment.

According to health authorities, the outbreak has already caused more than 80 suspected deaths and over 240 suspected cases, with most infections reported in eastern Congo’s Iturbi province. Uganda has also confirmed infections, including cases in the capital, Kampala, raising concerns about cross-border transmission.

The World Health Organization warned that ongoing conflict, weak healthcare systems, and delayed detection of the virus have complicated efforts to contain the outbreak. Medical teams are deploying emergency supplies, increasing surveillance, and strengthening border screening in affected regions.

Experts say the Bundibugyo strain is especially concerning because it has appeared only a few times in history and lacks established vaccines and therapies available for other Ebola variants. Public health officials are urging rapid international support to prevent the outbreak from expanding further across Central Africa.
