US to cut 5,000 troops in Germany amid Trump clash with Chancellor Merz

02 May 2026 US to cut 5,000 troops in Germany amid Trump clash with Chancellor Merz

The United States is set to reduce its military presence in Germany by about 5,000 troops, in a move that has intensified tensions between Washington and Berlin.

According to defence officials, the decision follows a widening dispute between US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, after Merz criticised aspects of US strategy in the ongoing Iran conflict. The remarks triggered a strong reaction from Trump and added strain to already sensitive NATO relations.

The planned withdrawal will include the removal of a brigade combat team and the cancellation of a previously planned deployment of additional forces to Germany. The reduction is expected to take place over the next six to twelve months, according to Pentagon sources.

Germany currently hosts around 35,000 US troops, making it one of the most important American military hubs in Europe. Officials say the drawdown is part of a broader reassessment of US force posture in Europe, with an increasing focus on shifting strategic priorities.

The announcement has sparked concern among some lawmakers and defence analysts, who warn that reducing troop levels during ongoing global tensions could weaken NATO’s deterrence posture. Others argue it reflects a long-term effort to rebalance US military commitments.

The decision marks another flashpoint in the growing political divide between the US and European allies, with further developments expected as the withdrawal plan is implemented.
