US Bases In Jordan And UAE After US Strike On Larak Island.
Iran has launched attacks against US military targets in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, according to Iranian authorities, following a US strike on Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island.
The latest escalation came after US forces targeted two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, located in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command said the launchers were preparing to launch naval mines into the waterway and represented an “imminent threat”.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) subsequently said it had attacked US bases in Jordan. Iranian authorities also reported attacks against US military targets at the Al Minhad airbase in the UAE. The developments mark a significant escalation after a period of relative calm between Washington and Tehran.
Jordanian authorities said their air-defence systems intercepted eight missiles that entered the country's airspace. Reports indicated that the majority of the Iranian projectiles were intercepted, limiting the impact on the targeted US facilities.
The US strike on Larak Island was reportedly carried out after American forces detected preparations by Iranian forces to use rockets and sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital international shipping route. The waterway is particularly important to global energy markets because a significant proportion of the world's oil shipments normally pass through it.
Iran has previously threatened to use its control over the area as leverage during the wider confrontation, while the United States has warned against attempts to interfere with commercial shipping. Iranian officials have described the US attack as an act of aggression and vowed to respond.
