US President Donald Trump has vowed to respond strongly against Iran following the first direct exchange of fire between the two sides in a month, increasing fears that the latest confrontation could trigger another major escalation in the region.
The renewed tensions followed US military action against Iranian launch sites on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. Washington said the strikes were aimed at Iranian military capabilities and activities that posed a threat to US forces and shipping in the strategically important waterway.
Iran responded by launching missiles towards US military bases in Jordan, according to reports. However, the United States later confirmed that the island had not been targeted in the reported overnight military operations, while the video accompanying Trump's post was identified as AI-generated.
Kharg Island is particularly important to Iran because it is a major centre for the country's oil exports. Any genuine attack on the facility could have serious consequences for Iran's economy and international energy markets.
At the same time, Washington is increasing economic pressure on Tehran through additional sanctions. The US administration has signalled that it intends to continue targeting Iranian financial networks and foreign entities that support Iran's economy. The latest military exchange therefore comes alongside growing economic and diplomatic pressure, creating a tense situation with the possibility of further confrontation.
