Trump Announces Hamas Disarmament Agreement As Part Of Gaza Peace Plan
President Donald Trump has announced an agreement aimed at the complete disarmament of Hamas as part of a wider peace initiative for Gaza.
Speaking from Washington, Trump said the agreement forms a key element of his administration's 20 point Gaza peace plan, describing it as a major step towards ending years of conflict. He said the proposal would allow Israeli forces to withdraw in phases while a new Palestinian administration assumes responsibility for governing Gaza.
Under the proposed framework, Hamas and other armed groups would surrender their weapons under international supervision. An International Stabilisation Force would be deployed to help maintain security while a newly established Palestinian police force takes over law enforcement duties.
Trump credited mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye for helping secure the agreement. He said the initiative also includes plans for humanitarian aid, reconstruction funding, and the gradual restoration of civilian administration across Gaza.
Despite Trump's announcement, Israeli officials have expressed significant reservations. They insist that Hamas must be fully and verifiably disarmed before any large scale withdrawal of Israeli forces can begin, warning that the group could otherwise rebuild its military capabilities.
Hamas has also disputed parts of Trump's description of the agreement. Representatives indicated they were prepared to place weapons into supervised storage as negotiations continue but rejected suggestions that they had agreed to unconditional or immediate disarmament.
International observers welcomed renewed diplomatic efforts but cautioned that major challenges remain before a lasting ceasefire can be achieved. Verification arrangements, governance reforms, and security guarantees are expected to be among the most difficult issues during implementation.
The proposal represents one of the most ambitious attempts to resolve the Gaza conflict in recent years. However, its success will depend on continued negotiations between all parties and whether both Israel and Hamas ultimately commit to carrying out the agreement in full.
