Seven Killed in Gaza on Nakba Day as Israeli Strike Targets Senior Hamas Figure

16 May 2026 Seven Killed in Gaza on Nakba Day as Israeli Strike Targets Senior Hamas Figure

At least seven people were killed in Gaza after Israeli airstrikes hit parts of Gaza City during events marking Nakba Day, a date that commemorates the displacement of Palestinians following the creation of Israel in 1948.

Israeli officials stated that the operation was aimed at a senior Hamas commander believed to be connected to attacks carried out against Israel in recent years. Reports indicated that strikes targeted locations in the Rimal area of Gaza City, including a residential building and a nearby vehicle.

Emergency workers and residents rushed to search through damaged buildings after the explosions, with videos from the scene showing widespread destruction and injured civilians being transported to hospitals. Local rescue teams said the strikes occurred without prior warning to nearby residents.

The attacks came during a period of heightened emotion for Palestinians observing Nakba Day, which symbolizes loss, displacement, and the continuing impact of decades of conflict. Across Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories, commemorations were held while tensions remained high amid ongoing military activity and stalled diplomatic efforts.

Israeli authorities defended the strikes, saying they were part of continued operations against Hamas leadership and armed infrastructure. However, the civilian deaths have once again raised concerns about the humanitarian impact of military actions in densely populated areas.

Despite earlier ceasefire agreements and international mediation attempts, violence has continued across Gaza in recent months. Aid agencies and humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned about worsening living conditions, shortages of supplies, and growing risks for civilians trapped in the conflict zone.
