Russia Says It Shot Down More Than 400 Ukrainian Drones in Massive Overnight Attack
Russia says its air defences destroyed 419 Ukrainian drones during a huge overnight assault across several regions of the country. Officials described it as one of the biggest drone attacks since the war began. The barrage reportedly included targets in and around the Moscow region.
Russian authorities said a six month old baby was killed after debris from a drone attack struck a residential area outside Moscow. The Defence Ministry claimed drones were intercepted across multiple regions as Ukraine continued expanding its long range strike campaign. Air traffic was temporarily disrupted at several airports during the attacks. Moscow has accused Kyiv of escalating cross border assaults on civilian areas.
Ukraine has not confirmed Russia's reported interception figures, but President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly defended long range drone operations as a legitimate response to Russia's invasion. Ukrainian officials say they are targeting military facilities, fuel depots and infrastructure that support Russia's war effort. Recent attacks have also focused on satellite communications and energy sites deep inside Russian territory.
The latest wave of drone strikes comes as the conflict enters its fifth year with both sides increasing the use of unmanned aerial technology. Ukraine has significantly expanded domestic drone production while Russia has strengthened its air defence network around key cities and strategic infrastructure. Analysts say the growing frequency of deep strikes reflects a new phase of the war.
Military experts believe both Russia and Ukraine are relying increasingly on drones to weaken each other's logistics and economic capacity while limiting risks to pilots. The expanding drone campaign has become one of the defining features of the conflict. It has also raised concerns about civilian safety far from the front lines.
As fighting continues, neither side has shown signs of easing its military operations despite international calls for a negotiated settlement. With drone attacks becoming larger and more sophisticated, the conflict is expected to remain highly volatile in the months ahead. The latest exchanges underline how the battlefield now extends well beyond the front line into major cities and strategic regions. Both Moscow and Kyiv continue to accuse each other of endangering civilians.
