Johannesburg Mass Shooting Leaves 12 Dead as Police Hunt Gunmen
A mass shooting in Johannesburg, South Africa, has claimed the lives of 12 people and left at least nine others wounded, prompting a large-scale police investigation and manhunt.
The attack took place late Tuesday night at the Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland, a suburb east of Johannesburg. According to police, more than ten-armed men arrived in a white Toyota Quantum vehicle and entered the settlement through multiple access points before opening fire on residents at several locations.
Authorities said nine men and three women were killed in the attack. Eleven victims died at the scene, while another later succumbed to injuries in hospital. Several others remain hospitalized after sustaining gunshot wounds.
Police officials have described the killings as a brutal and senseless act of violence. While speculation has emerged that the shooting could be linked to illegal mining activities and gang rivalries in the area, investigators stressed that it is currently too early to confirm any motive. Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni said all possibilities are being examined, but no definitive conclusions have been reached.
Detectives, forensic specialists, and crime intelligence teams have been deployed to investigate the massacre and locate those responsible. No arrests have been made so far.
The Cleveland area has long been associated with illegal mining operations and organized criminal activity. Residents have reported growing concerns over violence in recent months, with community leaders warning that shootings have become increasingly common in and around the settlement.
South Africa continues to struggle with one of the highest violent crime rates in the world, with authorities recording dozens of murders each day. The latest tragedy has renewed calls for stronger security measures and intensified efforts to tackle organized crime networks operating in vulnerable communities.
