Iran Foreign Minister Heads To China As War Continues.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is heading to China on September 16 as the conflict between Iran and the United States continues, with Beijing attempting to encourage a diplomatic solution to the crisis.
According to China's Foreign Ministry, Araghchi is scheduled to meet his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi during his visit to Beijing. The two foreign ministers also met on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi last week.
China has maintained close economic and diplomatic relations with Iran and has called for political and diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict. Chinese officials have said Beijing is following developments in the Middle East and Gulf region and wants disputes to be addressed through negotiations rather than continued military confrontation.
The visit comes as the war continues to affect shipping and energy supplies across the region. The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy routes, has experienced major disruption since the conflict began, raising concerns over the wider impact on global trade and fuel markets.
China's diplomatic involvement is also significant because President Xi Jinping is expected to travel to Washington for talks with US President Donald Trump in the coming period. The timing of Araghchi's visit therefore places the discussions between Tehran and Beijing within a wider diplomatic effort surrounding the conflict.
Meanwhile, the wider regional situation remains tense. Saudi Arabia has said its forces intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone that was heading towards the area of Mecca. The Houthis rejected the allegation that they had targeted Islam's holiest site and described the claim as false.
Araghchi's meeting with Wang Yi is expected to focus on the ongoing conflict and possible diplomatic pathways. However, it remains unclear whether China's efforts will lead to an immediate reduction in fighting, as military activity and regional tensions continue.
