Elite Divers Locate Bodies of Four Italian Tourists in Deep Maldives Cave as Recovery Mission Continues

19 May 2026 Elite Divers Locate Bodies of Four Italian Tourists in Deep Maldives Cave as Recovery Mission Continues

Authorities in the Maldives have confirmed that the bodies of four Italian tourists have been found inside a deep underwater cave, following an intensive multinational search and recovery operation.

The divers were discovered in the innermost section of a complex cave system in Vava Atoll, approximately 50 to 60 meters below the ocean surface well beyond the country’s recommended recreational diving limits. A fifth member of the group, a diving instructor, had earlier been found outside the cave entrance.

The recovery was carried out by an elite team of Finnish technical divers working alongside Maldivian police and military personnel. The operation involved advanced diving equipment, including rebreather systems designed for deep and extended underwater missions in confined environments.

The accident has been described as one of the worst diving tragedies in Maldives history. Authorities say the group had been conducting a research-related dive when they went missing, and investigations are now focusing on whether safety limits and required permits were exceeded.

Recovery efforts have been particularly dangerous. A Maldivian military diver previously died during the search operation due to decompression sickness, forcing a temporary suspension of efforts before specialist international teams resumed the mission.

Officials say the remaining operation will focus on safely retrieving the bodies over multiple dives due to the extreme depth and complexity of the cave system. Investigations into the cause of the incident are ongoing.
