Australia Detects First H5 Bird Flu Case as Contagious Virus Reaches New Continent

20 Jun 2026 Australia Detects First H5 Bird Flu Case as Contagious Virus Reaches New Continent

Australia has confirmed its first case of the H5 bird flu strain after the virus was detected in a migratory seabird in Western Australia. The discovery means the highly contagious strain has now reached every continent. Authorities said the infected bird was a brown skua found in a remote area.

The detection was confirmed by Australia’s national science agency following tests on the sick bird. A second bird, a giant petrel, has also returned a suspected positive result. Officials said there is currently no evidence of infection among poultry or agricultural systems.

The Australian government said the arrival of H5 bird flu was concerning but not unexpected due to its global spread. Agriculture officials have launched emergency discussions to assess the situation and strengthen monitoring efforts. The virus has caused serious outbreaks among birds and some mammals around the world.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said authorities were prepared to respond and would take steps to limit the spread of the disease. Experts are particularly focused on protecting native wildlife, including vulnerable bird populations.

Officials have urged the public to avoid contact with sick or dead birds while surveillance continues. Australia is increasing its biosecurity measures as scientists monitor whether the virus has spread further among wildlife.
