Ospreys Return to South Cumbrian Nature Reserve for New Breeding Season

08 Apr 2026 Ospreys Return to South Cumbrian Nature Reserve for New Breeding Season

Ospreys have returned to Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve, a wetland reserve in South Cumbria managed by Cumbria Wildlife Trust.

The male osprey, known as White YW, arrived at the reserve on March 28, with his long-time partner Blue 35 following on April 6. Their return ended a period of uncertainty after there was no initial sign of the female, prompting interest from local birdwatchers and conservationists.

Blue 35’s arrival also saw off a younger female osprey, Blue 717, which had briefly taken up residence on the main nest. Blue 717 now appears to be settling on a second nest at the reserve, possibly alongside another male osprey, Blue 474.

Keziah Taylor, assistant reserves officer for Cumbria Wildlife Trust, said the return of the established pair was “great” and that staff and visitors alike were looking forward to observing the season unfold. The trust has also announced live osprey cameras on both nests this year so that the public can follow nesting activity online.

Blue 35 and White YW first began nesting at Foulshaw Moss in 2013 after the reserve was restored from commercial forestry to wetland habitat. Since 2014, the pair has bred at the site each year, becoming a highlight of the local wildlife calendar.

Visitors to the reserve are reminded that the second nest is close to the boardwalk and may be vulnerable to disturbance. A viewing hide has been provided to help protect the birds while allowing people to watch them.

Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve is free and open daily, and those interested in seeing the ospreys in action can also view them via the live osprey cams hosted by the trust.
