Millions Could Be Eligible for £25 Cold Weather Payments as UK Temperatures Plunge

As the winter freeze tightens its grip across the UK, millions of households may be entitled to Cold Weather Payments – money many people don’t even realise they qualify for. The government’s Cold Weather Payment scheme offers £25 for every seven-day period in which temperatures in a person’s local area are recorded or forecast to be zero degrees Celsius or below.
The scheme runs annually from 1 November to 31 March, supporting vulnerable households during the coldest months of the year. Payments are made automatically to people receiving certain benefits, including Pension Credit and specific income-related support. Importantly, the Cold Weather Payment does not affect any other benefits and requires no application – eligible residents simply receive the money once a qualifying period of cold weather has been confirmed.
With large parts of the country experiencing sub-zero temperatures this week, experts warn that many people may be missing out because they aren’t aware that a payment has been triggered in their area. The government is encouraging residents to check their eligibility by entering their postcode on gov.uk, where the system will confirm whether their local weather station has met the required criteria.
As the cold spell is expected to continue, households already struggling with rising living costs could receive much-needed support. For many, the Cold Weather Payment could help cover heating bills during one of the chilliest starts to winter in recent years.
