Coastguard launches Carlisle helicopter base to reduce response times

09 Apr 2026 Coastguard launches Carlisle helicopter base to reduce response times

A new Coastguard helicopter base has begun operations at Carlisle Lake District Airport, bringing a dedicated search and rescue aircraft to the region for the first time. The base will operate seasonally from now until September, helping crews reach emergencies more quickly across Cumbria.

Previously, Coastguard helicopters responding to incidents in Cumbria were dispatched from Prestwick in Scotland or Caernarfon in Wales, resulting in longer transit times. With the new Carlisle base in place, crews can now be airborne within around 15 minutes of being tasked between 9 am and 9 pm.

The establishment of the base follows the successful launch of a similar seasonal facility in Oban earlier this year and forms part of a wider national programme to enhance search and rescue aviation capability. Two AgustaWestland AW189 rescue helicopters are stationed at Oban and Carlisle, providing extra capacity during peak demand periods driven by outdoor leisure activity.

HM Coastguard officials say the additional bases and aircraft will strengthen the emergency response network and help save lives by reducing the time it takes to reach people in trouble at sea or along the coast. They also urged the public to remain aware of coastal hazards and to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard if they need assistance.

Richard Jenkinson, airport director at Carlisle Lake District Airport, welcomed the decision to base a helicopter in the city, saying it highlights Carlisle’s growing role as an aviation hub for the North and will support vital emergency services in the region.
