22 arrests in 15-week operation targeting anti-social driving
A 15-week police crackdown on dangerous and anti-social driving has resulted in 22 arrests and more than 1,500 vehicles being stopped across Cumbria.
Operation Colossus, which launched on August 4, targeted road safety problem areas throughout the county, with most arrests linked to drug driving. Officers carried out 27 stop searches and issued 206 tickets for offences such as speeding, defective tyres, driving without insurance or a licence, and using a mobile phone behind the wheel.
During the operation, police also seized 29 vehicles, including six e-bikes and scooters.
Inspector Alex Johnson, from Cumbria Police’s Operational Support Unit, said officers focused on areas where irresponsible vehicle use was causing “significant harm” to local communities. He added that the targeted approach was shaped by concerns raised by neighbourhood teams and residents.
Although Operation Colossus has now ended, road-safety enforcement will continue under Operation Limit a December and New Year campaign aimed at tackling drink and drug driving. Last year’s Operation Limit saw more than 3,000 vehicles stopped and over 200 arrests.
