Manchester Airport Closes Terminal 1 After More Than Six Decades

Terminal 1 at Manchester Airport has officially closed after more than six decades of operation, marking the end of an era for one of the airport’s original passenger terminals.

The terminal first opened in 1962 and has served millions of passengers over the years. Its closure is part of a long term £1.3 billion redevelopment programme designed to modernise the airport and improve passenger facilities.

With the closure, Manchester Airport will now operate with two main terminals instead of three. The newly expanded Terminal 2 will handle the majority of passengers while Terminal 3 will continue to operate mainly for Ryanair flights.

Airport officials said the move allows the airport to simplify operations and improve the travel experience for passengers. The transformation programme has significantly expanded Terminal 2, which now manages more than 75 percent of passenger traffic passing through the airport.

The closure also frees up space for further redevelopment at the airport, including additional seating areas and new facilities for travellers.

Manchester Airport has continued to grow in recent years, handling a record number of passengers and expanding its routes to destinations around the world. Airport leaders described the closure of Terminal 1 as the start of a new chapter in the airport’s development.
