Historic Cartmel Racecourse looks forward to a stellar season ahead

Historic Cartmel Racecourse looks forward to a stellar season ahead

The opening meeting of the year is drawing near at Cartmel Racecourse, located close to Grange-over-Sands, with gates set to open for the popular three-day Whit Meeting on Saturday, May 23.
Known as a favourite destination for families and friends, the scenic racecourse is preparing to offer more entertainment than ever across its nine annual racedays. General manager Geraldine McKay said preparations are in full swing ahead of the season’s first fixture.
“Cartmel has a special atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else,” she said. “That’s why it remains such a hit with families and groups who return year after year.”
She added that the course provides the perfect escape from daily pressures, giving visitors a chance to relax in a beautiful rural setting. Many regulars have been attending for decades, while newcomers are always welcomed as they begin their own Cartmel traditions.
Cartmel Racecourse has a long heritage, with racing at the site recorded as early as 1856. However, local legend suggests that monks from nearby Cartmel Priory were racing mules in the area in the fifteenth century. The course originally staged flat racing but switched to jump racing in the early 1900s to better reflect the area’s farming and hunting culture.
Despite changes over the years, the racecourse has retained its signature charm, surrounded by timeless countryside and a relaxed, summer atmosphere that continues to attract visitors.
The new season will again combine family-friendly entertainment with National Hunt racing. Food and hospitality options will range from the Louis Roederer Restaurant and Paddock Side dining to the traditional homemade picnic or barbecue.
The popular concert raceday returns on Friday, June 26, featuring David Gray as part of his world tour marking the 20th anniversary of White Ladder. Fairground rides and traditional stalls will appear at every raceday, while Saturday, July 18, includes the Shetland Pony Grand National. The Oakmere Homes Family Funday on Sunday, June 28, will also feature a special school sports day for children.
McKay said Cartmel’s racedays have long acted as community gatherings, and although visitors now come from far beyond the local area, that sense of togetherness remains strong.
She highlighted the racecourse’s unique policy allowing guests to bring their own wine and picnics, contributing to its laid-back, welcoming environment.
“Cartmel is a very special place,” she said. “We’re all excited for the season ahead.”
