Sunday Bus Service Introduced On Popular Penrith To Kirkby Stephen Route
Residents and visitors across Cumbria are set to benefit from improved public transport after it was confirmed that the 563 bus route between Penrith and Kirkby Stephen will now operate on Sundays as well as weekdays and Saturdays.
The additional service is expected to provide greater flexibility for passengers travelling for work, leisure, shopping, and family visits. The 563 service, operated by Stagecoach, connects communities including Penrith, Temple Sowerby, Kirkby Thore, Appleby, Warcop, Brough, and Kirkby Stephen. The introduction of Sunday journeys is seen as a significant improvement for residents who previously had limited weekend travel options.
Transport campaigners have welcomed the move, saying improved weekend services will help reduce isolation in rural communities while making it easier for people to access employment, healthcare, education, and local amenities.
The expanded timetable is also expected to support the region's tourism industry. Visitors exploring the Eden Valley and surrounding countryside will have greater opportunities to travel without relying on private vehicles, helping improve access to attractions, walking routes, cafés, and local businesses.
Local businesses have also welcomed the improved service, noting that better weekend transport links can encourage more visitors to spend time in market towns along the route. Increased passenger numbers may also provide an economic boost for shops, restaurants, and hospitality venues.
Stagecoach said the updated timetable forms part of ongoing efforts to improve connectivity across rural Cumbria. The operator encouraged passengers to check the latest timetable before travelling and to use official journey planning tools for the most up to date service information.
