Speed Camera Vans Deployed Across Cumbria as Police Target Dangerous Driving

31 May 2026 Speed Camera Vans Deployed Across Cumbria as Police Target Dangerous Driving

CUMBRIA Motorists across Cumbria are being urged to follow speed limits and drive responsibly as police deploy mobile speed camera vans at multiple locations throughout the county today.

According to Cumbria Police, road safety camera units will be operating on several major routes on Sunday, May 31, as part of ongoing enforcement efforts aimed at reducing dangerous driving and preventing serious road traffic accidents.

The areas scheduled for monitoring include the A66 east of Keswick, the A685 between Brough and Tebay, the A6 south of Penrith, the A65 between Kendal and Kirkby Lonsdale, and sections of the M6 between Junctions 40 and 37. Camera enforcement will also take place in the wider Penrith area and along the A683 between Sedbergh and Kirkby Lonsdale.

Police officials say the camera vans are part of a wider strategy designed to improve road safety and encourage compliance with speed limits. Speeding continues to be regarded as one of the leading factors contributing to serious and fatal collisions on roads across the United Kingdom.

The deployment comes as authorities continue to focus on reducing dangerous driving behaviour throughout Cumbria’s road network, particularly on busy routes that experience high traffic volumes during weekends and holiday periods. Roads such as the A66 and M6 are frequently used by both local motorists and tourists travelling through the region.

Cumbria Police regularly publishes camera van locations as part of its road safety campaign, arguing that visibility and public awareness can help encourage safer driving habits. Officials emphasize that the primary goal is not simply enforcement but also accident prevention and public safety.

Previous road safety operations carried out by the force have resulted in hundreds of motorists being detected for speeding offences within a matter of days. Police have repeatedly warned that excessive speed significantly increases both the likelihood of collisions and the severity of injuries when accidents occur.

Road safety campaigners continue to support targeted enforcement measures, particularly on routes with a history of speeding incidents or heavy traffic flows. They argue that visible enforcement acts as a deterrent and encourages drivers to remain attentive to changing speed limits and road conditions.

Authorities are reminding motorists to plan journeys carefully, remain aware of posted speed restrictions, and adjust their driving according to weather, traffic, and road conditions. Drivers found exceeding speed limits may face fines, penalty points, or further legal action depending on the severity of the offence.

Police say enforcement operations will continue across the county as part of ongoing efforts to improve safety for all road users and reduce the number of preventable accidents on Cumbria’s roads.
