Police Deploy Speed Camera Vans Across Cumbria in Ongoing Road Safety Campaign

12 Jun 2026 Police Deploy Speed Camera Vans Across Cumbria in Ongoing Road Safety Campaign

Cumbria Police's Road Safety Camera Team has announced that mobile speed enforcement units will be operating at various locations across the county today.

The deployments are focused on routes where speeding has been identified as a recurring concern and where previous enforcement activity has highlighted the need for continued monitoring.

The use of camera vans is designed to encourage motorists to comply with speed limits rather than simply issue penalties. Police say excessive speed remains one of the leading factors contributing to serious and fatal road collisions, and regular enforcement plays a crucial role in improving driver behaviour and reducing risks on both urban and rural roads.

Officers will be monitoring a number of major routes and local roads throughout the day, including key transport corridors frequently used by commuters, commercial vehicles, and tourists. The locations are selected based on collision data, community concerns, and intelligence gathered through previous enforcement operations.

Road safety officials continue to remind drivers that speed limits represent maximum legal limits rather than target speeds. Factors such as weather conditions, traffic volume, road layout, and visibility should always be considered when determining a safe travelling speed. Drivers are also encouraged to remain vigilant in residential areas, near schools, and in locations where vulnerable road users may be present.

The campaign forms part of wider efforts to improve road safety across Cumbria, where authorities have repeatedly stressed the importance of responsible driving. Previous enforcement operations have resulted in numerous motorists being detected travelling above the speed limit, highlighting the ongoing need for education and enforcement measures.

Police have urged all road users to plan journeys carefully, allow extra travel time where necessary, and comply with speed restrictions at all times. Officials say the ultimate objective of the camera van programme is not to generate fines but to prevent collisions, save lives, and make Cumbria’s roads safer for everyone.
