One Week Right Turn Restriction For Kendal Bridge.
Drivers in Kendal will face a temporary restriction on a key route next month as work begins to support the town's major flood defence scheme.
From Monday, September 7, motorists will be unable to turn right over Nether Bridge from Aynam Road for one week. The temporary restriction is required while ground condition testing takes place near the bridge ahead of construction work planned for the Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme.
A Sonic Rig will be used to carry out the testing, helping engineers understand ground conditions before the main flood defence construction work begins in the autumn. A signed diversion route will be provided for motorists during the restriction.
However, pedestrian access will remain unaffected, meaning people walking through the area will still be able to use the bridge. The temporary traffic measure is part of preparations for a much larger project designed to reduce the risk of flooding in Kendal.
When completed, the flood defence scheme is expected to protect around 1,920 homes and 2,250 businesses from the impacts of flooding. The project represents a major investment in protecting homes, businesses and infrastructure across the town, where flooding has previously caused significant disruption.
Residents and businesses are being encouraged to plan ahead while the temporary restriction is in place and follow the signed diversion rather than attempting to use the restricted turn.
People who want to learn more about the wider flood defence scheme can also visit the Flood Scheme Information Hub at the Lidl car park on Beezon Road. The information hub is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 4pm, giving residents an opportunity to speak directly with members of the Environment Agency team.
Zohel Ali, project manager for the Aynam Road section of the scheme, thanked residents and road users for their patience while the preparatory work takes place. The one week restriction is expected to be temporary, with the ground investigations helping prepare the way for the main flood defence construction programme later in the year.
Motorists are being advised to allow extra time for journeys and follow the diversion signs from September 7. The work marks another step towards delivering a major flood protection scheme for Kendal, which is expected to provide long term protection for thousands of residents and businesses across the town.
