Major Traffic Restrictions Announced for Appleby Horse Fair as Thousands Expected
Authorities have confirmed that traffic restrictions will be put in place during the upcoming Appleby Horse Fair as large crowds and heavy vehicle movement are expected across the region.
The annual event attracts thousands of visitors, along with caravans, horse drawn vehicles, and increased road traffic, leading officials to introduce temporary measures to improve safety and reduce congestion. Motorists have been advised to plan journeys in advance and expect delays on key routes surrounding Appleby.
According to published traffic plans, restrictions may include waiting bans, one way systems, temporary speed limits, road closures, and permit only parking zones in some areas. Several local roads around Appleby and nearby routes are expected to be affected during the fair period.
Drivers using the A66 Appleby Bypass, B6542, and B6260 have also been warned to remain alert due to slow moving traffic and increased pedestrian activity. Officials say public safety remains the main priority during one of the region’s busiest annual gatherings.
Appleby Horse Fair is one of the best known traditional fairs in the UK and brings a significant rise in visitors each year. While the event supports local trade and tourism, it also creates temporary transport challenges for residents and travelers.
Residents and visitors are being urged to follow road signs, respect restrictions, and allow extra travel time throughout the event period. Authorities say cooperation from the public will help keep roads moving safely and reduce disruption.
