A590 Furness hotspot under scrutiny after surge in police traffic stops
The A590 in Furness has been highlighted once again as a key road safety concern following a series of targeted police operations and ongoing monitoring of driver behaviour in the area.
Local policing teams have carried out high-visibility roadside checks as part of wider efforts to tackle speeding, careless driving, and other offences along one of Cumbria’s busiest transport corridors. During recent enforcement activity in and around Barrow and Dalton-in-Furness, officers stopped more than 100 vehicles, issued numerous traffic reports, and made arrests linked to drug driving offences.
Authorities say the A590 is a vital route for commuters, freight traffic, and tourism, but it also experiences regular congestion and incidents that can quickly bring the road to a standstill. Safety campaigns have been intensified in response to repeated collisions and concerns raised by local communities.
Officials involved in road safety partnerships have previously described sections of the A590 as vulnerable to disruption, noting that even a single collision can lead to significant delays and knock-on impacts across the Furness peninsula.
Police say continued enforcement, alongside infrastructure improvements and driver education, will be key to reducing incidents and improving safety on the route.
