US Senator Demands Answers Over TikTok Deal and National Security Concerns

31 May 2026 US Senator Demands Answers Over TikTok Deal and National Security Concerns

A new political battle is emerging over the future of TikTok in the United States as Senator Ed Markey has called for greater transparency regarding the social media platform’s recent restructuring deal, raising concerns that national security risks may still exist despite efforts to separate the company from its Chinese parent firm, ByteDance.

In letters sent to TikTok USDS and technology giant Oracle, Markey requested detailed information about how the companies are protecting American user data and preventing potential foreign influence over the platform’s powerful recommendation algorithm. The senator argued that the public and Congress still know very little about the agreement that allowed TikTok to continue operating in the United States.

The controversy stems from a major deal finalized earlier this year that transferred TikTok’s U.S. operations into a new entity known as TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC. The arrangement was designed to address long-standing concerns from U.S. lawmakers who feared that the Chinese government could potentially gain access to American user data or influence the content displayed on the platform. Under the agreement, American and international investors control a majority stake, while ByteDance retains a minority ownership position. Oracle was assigned a central role in managing data security and cloud infrastructure.

Despite these safeguards, Markey says important questions remain unanswered. He has expressed concerns about whether ByteDance still maintains enough involvement to influence the platform’s operations, particularly through its recommendation systems and source code. According to the senator, the complexity of TikTok’s technology raises doubts about whether any review process can fully guarantee protection against manipulation or unauthorized influence.

The senator also criticized what he described as a lack of transparency surrounding the deal. He noted that lawmakers have received limited information about the exact structure of the agreement, the responsibilities assigned to Oracle, and the mechanisms being used to monitor TikTok’s technology. Markey has repeatedly called for congressional oversight and additional disclosures from both the companies and the administration that approved the arrangement.

Oracle has become a key player in the effort to secure TikTok’s future in the United States. The company is responsible for hosting American user data and assisting with reviews of the platform’s software systems. However, critics argue that the public still lacks a clear understanding of how Oracle’s oversight functions in practice and whether it is sufficient to address the national security concerns that originally led to calls for a TikTok ban.

The TikTok debate has remained one of the most significant technology and national security issues in Washington. Supporters of the deal argue that it allows millions of Americans to continue using the popular video-sharing platform while introducing safeguards designed to protect sensitive information. Critics, however, warn that the agreement may not go far enough to eliminate concerns about foreign influence and data privacy.

With more than 200 million users in the United States, TikTok remains one of the country’s most influential social media platforms. As lawmakers continue to examine the details of the agreement, pressure is likely to grow on TikTok USDS and Oracle to provide clearer answers about how they intend to protect user information and maintain independence from ByteDance.

For now, the deal may have prevented a nationwide ban, but the political and regulatory scrutiny surrounding TikTok appears far from over. Congress is expected to continue pressing for greater accountability as questions persist over whether the restructuring agreement truly addresses the national security concerns that sparked years of controversy.
