London Named World’s Most Congested Capital as Drivers Lose Nearly Six Days a Year in Traffic
London has officially been named the most congested capital city in the world, according to the latest TomTom Traffic Index, with drivers spending an average of 141 hours stuck in traffic last year. That equates to almost six full days lost to congestion, as travel speeds slowed further compared to 2024 and gridlock worsened across the city despite ongoing infrastructure and transport changes.
The report paints a stark picture for the capital, revealing that it is now slower to travel around London than in notoriously traffic-heavy cities such as Bengaluru, Kolkata, Mexico City and Kyoto. On a global scale, only Barranquilla in Colombia ranked worse overall, underlining the severity of London’s congestion problem.
The findings are likely to reignite debate over road management, public transport capacity, and the long-term effectiveness of policies aimed at reducing car use in one of the world’s busiest cities.
