Google Adds Selfie Video Recovery As Countries Expand Digital Identity Systems
The global digital identity sector recorded several significant developments this week as governments and technology companies expanded the use of biometric verification, digital identity platforms, and secure authentication systems to improve cybersecurity, border management, and public services.
Google announced an optional selfie video recovery feature that enables eligible users to regain access to locked accounts by recording a short video during enrolment. During account recovery, a new selfie is compared with the encrypted reference video using facial recognition and liveness detection technology to confirm the user's identity, providing an additional recovery option alongside passkeys and traditional authentication methods.
In Ghana, new national identity regulations have made biometric verification mandatory for organisations checking the Ghana Card. Banks, hospitals, schools, telecommunications providers, and government agencies must now verify users through the National Identification Authority's biometric platform instead of relying on visual inspection or photocopies of identity cards.
Meanwhile, Egypt announced that it will begin piloting a digital visa on arrival system at Cairo International Airport from 1 August. Travellers will be able to obtain electronic visas through an online portal, mobile application, or airport self service kiosks before receiving QR codes that can be scanned by immigration officers during arrival processing.
In Europe, Greece has launched a €415.6 million tender for a nationwide Citizen Identity Hub that will modernise the country's production of passports and national identity cards. The new system will integrate biometric enrolment, electronic identity verification, and digital authentication services compatible with eIDAS 2.0 standards.
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has also begun seeking certified fingerprint examiners to strengthen background investigations and forensic identification capabilities. Specialists will analyse fingerprint evidence using the FBI's Next Generation Identification system while supporting immigration and criminal investigations.
Industry experts say these developments reflect a continuing global shift towards biometric authentication and digital identity verification across both public and private sectors. Governments are increasingly investing in secure identity technologies to improve cybersecurity, reduce fraud, strengthen border security, and simplify access to digital services for citizens and travellers.
