Britain’s Largest Floating Solar Farm Approved for Barrow: A New Dawn for Clean Energy in Cumbria
Barrow is gearing up for a green energy transformation as Britain’s biggest floating solar farm gets the go-ahead. The 46,500 panel project on Cavendish Dock will boost clean power for BAE Systems and reshape the region’s industrial future, all while keeping recreation and local access in mind.
The ambitious project, proposed by Associated British Ports (ABP), will transform part of Cavendish Dock into a major clean energy powerhouse and mark a significant step in the region’s transition toward low carbon industry.
A Solar Giant on the Water
The development will span around one-third of the dock’s surface, featuring an impressive 46,500 solar panels mounted on floating pontoons. Secured by an underwater anchoring system, the array will rest quietly on the water while generating an estimated 35-40MWp of renewable energy enough to power tens of thousands of homes.
With a projected lifespan of 50 years, the scheme promises long-term impact. After that time, the site will be fully decommissioned, ensuring environmental responsibility remains at the heart of the project.
Backing the Region’s Industrial Future
Westmorland & Furness Council’s strategic planning committee approved the application unanimously, recognising the solar farm as a crucial first step in ABP’s wider masterplan for Barrow.
A report to the committee highlighted a clear trend: electricity demand at ABP’s ports is expected to rise significantly as operations move toward electrification. The new solar array is designed to support this shift.
One of the biggest beneficiaries will be BAE Systems, which is set to receive the clean energy generated strengthening its decarbonisation strategy and enhancing the region’s role in Britain’s green industrial future.
A Year to Build a Legacy
ABP first announced its intentions in March, stating that construction would take around 12 months once approval was secured. With the green light now in place, Barrow could see work begin soon and a floating forest of solar panels rising over Cavendish Dock by the end of next year.
Balancing Progress and Recreation
Cavendish Dock is not just an industrial site it’s also a cherished space for local anglers and recreational users. Recognising this, ABP held consultations with the Barrow Angling Association to minimise disruption wherever possible.
While there may be temporary impacts during construction, these are expected to be short lived and limited to a small portion of the dock. Fishing will continue, and public access to surrounding walkways will remain open.
A Bright Future for Barrow
As Britain pushes toward net zero, Barrow’s floating solar farm is more than just an engineering project it’s a statement of intent. It puts Cumbria at the forefront of renewable innovation and supports the growing industries that drive the region’s economy.
When complete, this shimmering solar array will not only transform a dockside view, but also help power the future of Barrow, its industries, and its people with clean, home grown energy from the water that surrounds them.
