WWE legend John Cena ends 28-year career with shock submission defeat
WWE legend John Cena brought the curtain down on his 26 year career in dramatic fashion last night after suffering a shock defeat in Washington, DC.
Cena, 48, was beaten by Gunther at the Capital One Arena, tapping out to a submission hold in a moment that stunned fans inside the venue. It marked the first time Cena had been forced to submit in 20 years.
Following the bell, current champions Cody Rhodes and CM Punk entered the ring to pay tribute, draping their championship belts over Cena’s shoulders in a silent show of respect. Before leaving the ring for the final time, Cena removed his trainers and sweatbands and placed them on the canvas, a symbolic gesture confirming the end of his in ring career.
As he made his final walk up the ramp, Cena turned to the camera, saluted the crowd and said: “It’s been a pleasure serving you for all these years. Thank you.”
Tributes quickly poured in from across the wrestling world, led by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Writing on social media, his long time rival praised both his career and character.
“John, the time has come. We have spilled blood, torn tendons and broken records,” Johnson wrote. “The thing I love most is that you’re a good human being. Go have f***ing fun. You are the GOAT.”
The result was a bittersweet ending for one of WWE’s most decorated performers. A 17 time world champion, Cena became synonymous with his “Never Give Up” mantra, making the submission defeat a poignant and ironic final chapter.
Emotions ran high among fans following the match, with some directing their anger towards Gunther. The Austrian star required a security escort from the arena and was later seen leaving the venue amid loud boos and jeers.
For Cena, however, the night belonged to reflection rather than resentment, closing one of the most successful and influential careers in WWE history.
