Workington Reds Begin New Era as Club Moves to Temporary Home Ahead of Stadium Project
Workington Reds are entering a new chapter in the club’s history as preparations begin for the upcoming Northern Premier League season from a temporary base at the Fibres Community Stadium.
The move comes as redevelopment plans gather pace for the new Cumberland Sports Village, a project that will eventually provide a modern home for both Workington Reds and Workington Town. Club officials expect the football team to remain at the temporary venue for around 18 months while construction work is completed.
As part of their pre-season schedule, the Reds have arranged a series of friendly matches, including fixtures against fellow Cumbrian clubs Carlisle United and Barrow. Manager Billy Barr is continuing to finalize preparations as the squad gears up for another campaign in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.
The transition marks the end of an era for Borough Park, which has served as the club’s home for nearly nine decades. Supporters will have an opportunity to own a piece of the ground’s history, with memorabilia and various items from the stadium being made available before demolition begins.
Plans for the new Cumberland Sports Village include a stadium with a capacity of up to 5,000 spectators, modern facilities, and a community 3G pitch designed to benefit local sport. The project has received backing from local authorities, government funding initiatives, and football development partners.
While many supporters will feel sentimental about leaving Borough Park, the redevelopment is widely viewed as a significant investment in the future of football and sport in Workington. Club officials believe the new facilities will help strengthen the Reds’ long-term prospects both on and off the pitch.
As the countdown to the new season continues, Workington Reds are focused on adapting quickly to their temporary surroundings while looking ahead to a new permanent home that promises to transform the club’s future.
