Whitehaven Edge Keighley Cougars in Thrilling Late Victory

25 May 2026 Whitehaven Edge Keighley Cougars in Thrilling Late Victory

Whitehaven returned to winning ways with a dramatic 16-14 victory over Keighley Cougars in a fiercely contested rugby league encounter that kept supporters on the edge of their seats until the final moments.

The match, played at the Ortus Rec on Sunday, formed part of the club’s Heritage Day celebrations and attracted many former players and long-time supporters eager to witness a memorable afternoon for the Cumbrian side.

Ciaran Walker emerged as the star of the game for Whitehaven, contributing every point for his team through a try, a conversion, and five successful penalties. His calmness under pressure ultimately proved the difference in a contest that swung back and forth throughout the afternoon.

Whitehaven made the brighter start, with Walker opening the scoring through an early penalty before crossing for a try and adding the conversion to hand the hosts an 8-0 advantage inside the opening ten minutes. Keighley responded strongly, however, as tries from Dylan Proud and Ben Dean brought the visitors level before halftime.

Walker restored Whitehaven’s lead with two crucial penalties before the break, sending the home side into halftime with a narrow 12-8 advantage. But Keighley came out aggressively in the second half and quickly regained momentum when Isaac Farrell touched down for a converted try that moved the Cougars ahead.

The visitors appeared to be on course for victory entering the closing stages, especially after scoring three tries compared to Whitehaven’s single try during the game. However, Whitehaven showed resilience and determination, refusing to let the contest slip away.

With just minutes remaining, Walker held his nerve to level the scores with a penalty before delivering the decisive moment of the match. A minute from full-time, he successfully kicked another penalty to complete Whitehaven’s dramatic comeback and spark celebrations among players and supporters alike.

The victory gives Whitehaven a much-needed boost after a difficult run of results and could prove to be a turning point in their season. For Keighley Cougars, the defeat will be a frustrating one after an impressive attacking display that nearly earned them an important away victory.
