Traditional Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling Program Launches in Egremont
A new community-based wrestling initiative has been launched in Egremont, offering local residents the opportunity to take part in regular training sessions in the traditional sport of Cumberland & Westmorland wrestling.
The program, known as CWWA 2026 – Physical Activity, Strength & Fitness, has been introduced by the Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling Association with support from the Sport England Movement Fund. The project is designed to encourage greater participation in physical activity, particularly among young people, while promoting strength, fitness, confidence, and personal resilience.
Organizers say the initiative will provide structured coaching in a safe and welcoming environment, helping participants develop new skills, discipline, teamwork, and positive relationships with coaches and fellow athletes.
Additional support from Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, David Allen, has enabled the association to purchase modern wrestling uniforms for newcomers. The wrestling attire will feature a distinctive rust-coloured design inspired by the historic “Rust Men” associated with Florence Mine, reflecting Egremont’s industrial heritage and strengthening the project’s connection to the local community.
Interest in expanding wrestling activities in the town was further encouraged by the WRESTLE art exhibition, curated by artist Janet Moss, which highlighted the cultural importance of Cumberland & Westmorland wrestling and its longstanding links to local communities.
Training sessions are held every Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Falcon Club in Egremont, providing an accessible opportunity for residents to learn and participate in one of Cumbria’s most enduring sporting traditions.
