Thousands gather in Tehran as Iran’s World Cup squad receives emotional public sendoff
Thousands of supporters filled the streets of Tehran as Iran’s national football team received a major public sendoff ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Fans gathered in large numbers at Tehran’s Enqelab Square, waving Iranian flags, chanting football songs, and cheering players as the national squad prepared to leave for its final training camp in Turkiye before travelling to the United States for the tournament.
The ceremony also featured the unveiling of Iran’s official World Cup kit, with football officials describing the atmosphere as a moment of national unity and pride during a period of ongoing political and regional tension.
Iran’s participation in the tournament has attracted international attention in recent months because of heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington. Questions had previously been raised about visa approvals, security concerns, and whether Iran would play its matches in the United States. However, FIFA president Gianni Infantino recently confirmed that Iran would participate in the competition as planned.
Despite political uncertainty surrounding the tournament, supporters at the sendoff focused heavily on football and national pride, with many expressing hope that Team Melli could make a strong impact on the global stage.
Iran qualified for the World Cup after an impressive campaign in Asian qualifiers and is expected to enter the tournament as one of Asia’s strongest teams. Football fans across the country remain hopeful that the squad can progress deep into the competition despite the difficult circumstances surrounding preparations.
The team will now continue its training programme in Turkiye, where friendly matches and final tactical preparations are expected before the squad heads to the United States next month.
The emotional farewell highlighted the powerful connection between Iran’s national team and its supporters, with football continuing to serve as a major source of unity and national identity for millions of fans across the country.
