May Day Hound Racing Set for Thrilling Return at Gamelsby

05 May 2026 May Day Hound Racing Set for Thrilling Return at Gamelsby

Gamelsby is set to welcome hound racing supporters for one of the most anticipated fixtures of the early season as the May Day races return with a competitive five race card.

The meeting begins at 1pm with the Seniors and organisers are expecting a strong turnout after encouraging early season performances. The opening contest will attract plenty of attention, with Silver Dream arriving as the reigning champion and current table leader. Despite missing the recent look round of the course, the experienced hound remains one of the main names to watch.

One of the strongest challengers is Countess Ava, who impressed during last week’s course inspection and showed enough pace to suggest she could push the favourite all the way. Mel also enters the race with growing confidence after a solid start to the campaign and another strong recent run. The winner of the opening event will collect the Warnell Challenger Trophy.

Attention will then turn to the Senior Maidens, where Lucky Moon is expected to attract support after finishing well in senior company last week. Money Talks also drops into the grade and could become a serious contender in what looks a closely matched contest.

The Pups race later in the afternoon promises to be one of the most unpredictable events of the day. Only two runners completed the course last week, which has left this race wide open. Recent winner Nash On will be aiming to build on that success, but rivals including Acacia, Azalia, Cinderella and Thorn Daisy are all capable of making an impact.

The Puppy Maidens should provide another fascinating contest. Croft Rose heads into the race after a strong second place finish last time out, while Fable has shown consistency and an impressive finishing burst that could prove decisive in the closing stages.

One of the day’s biggest talking points is expected to come in the Open Restricted race. Baroness Ava arrives in excellent form after recent success at the Whitehaven Classic and another victory during last week’s look round. However, strong opposition is expected from littermates Malfunction and Blue Striker, setting up what could be one of the most competitive races of the afternoon.

The meeting will conclude with the Veterans at 4.30pm. Eagle Rock comes into the race in impressive form, while the reliable Thorn Pop is also expected to be among the leading challengers.

With experienced champions, promising youngsters and local supporters gathering at Gamelsby, the May Day meeting looks set to deliver a memorable afternoon of competitive racing and community spirit.
