Former Whitehaven Chairman Dick Raaz Dies at 81
Former Whitehaven Rugby League Club chairman Richard “Dick” Raaz has passed away at the age of 81, leaving behind a lasting legacy in both sport and public service.
Raaz, widely known as Dick, became involved with Whitehaven RLFC after moving to West Cumbria to manage the Low-Level Waste Repository at Driggs in 2007. At the time, the club was facing serious financial difficulties, and he stepped forward to help stabilise and support the organisation.
Although his early sporting passion was American football, particularly the Denver Broncos, Raaz quickly developed a deep appreciation for rugby league and became a familiar figure at Whitehaven matches. Supporters remembered him as an energetic and passionate presence in the stands at the Recreation Ground.
In a tribute, Whitehaven Rugby League Club described him as a “larger than life character” whose contribution to the club would not be forgotten. The club also extended condolences to his family and friends.
One of Raaz’s favourite sporting memories was Whitehaven’s dramatic 26-22 victory over Salford, a match he once described as the most exciting sporting event he had ever witnessed.
Beyond rugby league, Raaz had a distinguished career in both the military and the nuclear industry. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, he served on six submarines during his time in the US Navy, including commanding both the USS Haddow and USS Georgia.
After leaving the navy, he worked in nuclear decommissioning and waste management projects across the United States before later relocating to Cumbria. His professional career included senior roles at major nuclear sites in Washington, Colorado and New Mexico.
Raaz died at his home in Apache Junction, Arizona, on Sunday. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer.
