FIFA Orders Fans to Pay for Free World Cup Tickets After Website Error

05 Jun 2026 FIFA Orders Fans to Pay for Free World Cup Tickets After Website Error

FIFA has admitted that a technical glitch on its ticketing platform mistakenly allowed a number of supporters to secure tickets for the 2026 FIFA World Cup without making any payment.

However, the world football governing body has now informed affected fans that they must pay the full ticket price within seven days if they wish to keep their reservations.

According to FIFA, approximately 60 supporters were able to complete purchases that were incorrectly processed at a price of "0 USD" because of an error during the checkout process. The issue was discovered after the transactions had been completed and tickets had already been allocated.

In a statement, FIFA acknowledged the mistake and expressed regret for the inconvenience caused. Nevertheless, the organization emphasized that the tickets were never intended to be free and that the affected supporters would be required to pay the correct amount. FIFA said the seats have been temporarily reserved while fans are given the opportunity to finalize payment.

Reports indicate that those affected received emails informing them of the error and warning that failure to make payment within the specified deadline would result in the cancellation of their tickets. The incident quickly gained attention on social media, where fans debated whether FIFA should honour the original transactions or correct what it described as a clear system malfunction.

The controversy comes at a time when FIFA is already facing scrutiny over its ticketing policies for the 2026 World Cup. In recent months, supporters' groups and consumer advocates have criticized ticket prices, dynamic pricing models, and seat allocation procedures, arguing that the cost of attending the tournament has become increasingly expensive for ordinary fans.

Despite the backlash, FIFA maintains that the free-ticket incident was simply a technical error and not a promotional offer. The organization has assured supporters that their seats will remain available if payment is completed within the allotted period.

With the 2026 World Cup approaching and demand for tickets remaining exceptionally high, the latest episode adds to growing concerns over ticket accessibility and the overall fan experience at football's biggest tournament.
