FIFA and Iran Hold Crucial World Cup Talks as Tournament Concerns Ease
FIFA officials and representatives from Iran’s Football Federation have held what both sides described as “positive” discussions regarding Iran’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The meeting took place in Istanbul and focused on several key concerns raised by Iranian football authorities ahead of the tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. According to reports, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom met with Iran Football Federation president Mehdi Taj to discuss operational and security matters linked to the competition.
Iran had earlier expressed concerns over visa access, security guarantees, and the treatment of its players, staff, journalists, and supporters during the World Cup. The concerns intensified following recent geopolitical tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. Iranian officials had even requested that their group stage matches be moved from the United States to Mexico, although FIFA previously rejected that proposal.
After the latest talks, Mehdi Taj stated that FIFA had offered solutions to all major concerns raised by the Iranian federation. He also expressed optimism that Iran’s national team would be able to participate in the tournament without further complications.
FIFA has remained firm that the tournament schedule will continue as planned, with Iran expected to play its group matches in the United States. Reports suggest Iran’s team will prepare in Turkey before traveling to Arizona ahead of the competition.
The issue has attracted global attention because of the wider political tensions surrounding Iran’s presence at a major international sporting event hosted partly in the United States. Despite the uncertainty in recent months, the latest discussions appear to have reduced fears of a possible withdrawal or relocation request from the Iranian side.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest edition in the tournament’s history, featuring 48 teams across North America. Iran has already secured qualification and is expected to remain one of Asia’s strongest contenders heading into the competition.
