Fans Gather in Thousands to Bid Farewell to Borough Park

26 Apr 2026 Fans Gather in Thousands to Bid Farewell to Borough Park

Hundreds of football fans gathered at Borough Park to witness the final match played at the historic home of Workington Reds, bringing an emotional end to nearly nine decades of sporting history.

While the match itself carried little competitive significance, the occasion was defined by nostalgia and celebration rather than the result. Supporters filled the stands to say goodbye to the stadium, which has been a central part of the community since 1937.

On the pitch, Leek secured a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to a first-half goal from Hayden Campbell, with the result confirming their strong end to the season. However, the scoreline mattered far less than the atmosphere in the ground, as fans reflected on years of memories associated with Borough Park.

A crowd of more than 2,300 attended the match, enjoying the occasion in bright weather and celebrating the club’s survival after a challenging season. Former players also returned in large numbers, sharing stories and reconnecting with supporters as part of the farewell event.

The closure of Borough Park signals a new chapter for the club and the wider community, with plans to redevelop the site into a modern sports facility aimed at benefiting future generations. Despite the excitement surrounding the future, the historic ground leaves behind a legacy that will not be forgotten.
