Dramatic Games As Snooker League Reaches Second Half Of Season
The latest round of matches in the Derwent Valley Asbestos Removals Snooker League produced a series of dramatic contests as the competition entered the second half of the season.
Division One leader Kevin Basnett secured a narrow 3 2 victory over Andrew Mitchelhill after initially taking complete control of the match. Basnett won the opening three frames with breaks of 32, 35 and 39 to establish a commanding lead.
Mitchelhill then mounted an impressive fightback. He produced a clearance of 57 to take the fourth frame before another excellent clearance of 46 helped him win the final frame, although Basnett had already done enough to secure the match.
Ryan Ismay enjoyed a particularly strong evening, defeating Stephen Jackson 5 0 to move into second place in Division One. Ismay controlled the match from the opening frame and recorded a break of 36 during his dominant performance.
In Division Two, league leader Adam Morilla suffered his first defeat of the season after Adam Sowden produced a determined performance to win 3 2.
Morilla took the opening frame before Sowden responded to level the match. Morilla regained the advantage in the third, but Sowden forced a deciding frame by winning the fourth before completing his comeback with another strong performance in the final frame.
Mark Cowen also recorded a 3 2 victory, overcoming Stephen Harrison in another closely contested match. Harrison took the opening frame, but Cowen responded by winning the next two to move ahead.
Harrison then produced a commanding fourth frame to force a decider. Cowen kept his composure when it mattered most, controlling the final frame to secure the victory and move level with Morilla at the top of the division. The bottom of the Division Two table also produced an entertaining contest, with Andrew Carruthers recording his best performance of the season so far in a 4 1 victory over Craig Wilkinson.
Carruthers won the opening two frames before edging the third on the final black. Wilkinson managed to take the fourth frame after another close finish, but Carruthers responded strongly in the final frame to complete the 4 1 victory.
The results underline how competitive the league has become as the second half of the season begins, with several matches being decided by narrow margins and players showing their ability to recover from difficult positions.
With both divisions continuing to develop, the remaining fixtures are expected to provide further opportunities for players to challenge for league positions and build momentum towards the end of the season.
