Cumbria’s T20 Hopes Hit by Double Defeat Against Northumberland

02 Jun 2026 Cumbria’s T20 Hopes Hit by Double Defeat Against Northumberland

Cumbria endured a difficult day in the National Counties T20 Cup after losing both matches of a double-header against Northumberland.

In the opening contest, Northumberland secured victory by four wickets after restricting Cumbria’s batting line-up and successfully chasing their target. Despite determined efforts from the home side, Northumberland maintained control during the latter stages of the game to claim the win.

Cumbria’s batting was led by key contributions from Fraine and Winskill, who finished as joint top scorers with 23 runs apiece. With the ball, Stuart delivered the standout performance, taking four wickets and providing one of the few highlights for the hosts.

The second match began positively for Cumbria after openers Fallows and Rowe put together a promising partnership. However, a cluster of quick wickets halted the momentum and left the innings in need of rebuilding. Captain Roxine Beaumont-Sempill and Walkden responded with an important partnership before late hitting helped Cumbria post a competitive total of 156 for five.

Northumberland’s reply was driven by an explosive innings from Ross Whitfield, who smashed 67 runs from just 31 deliveries, including six fours and five sixes. His aggressive approach swung the match firmly in the visitors’ favour and proved decisive in the chase.

Walkden produced Cumbria’s best bowling figures in the second game, claiming two wickets while maintaining an economical spell, but Northumberland still reached their target with 11 balls remaining to complete a second victory of the day.

Despite the setbacks, Cumbria remain in contention for a place in the next stage of the competition thanks to results elsewhere in the group. Their attention now turns to a National Counties One-Day Trophy quarter-final clash against Staffordshire at Carlisle Cricket Club on June 7 before returning to T20 action later in the month.
