Cumbria Fall Short in High-Stakes Bill Beaumont Championship Clash

24 May 2026 Cumbria Fall Short in High-Stakes Bill Beaumont Championship Clash

Cumbria suffered a disappointing 57-31 defeat against Cheshire in a decisive final match of the Bill Beaumont County Championship Division Two campaign, bringing an end to their hopes of progressing further in the competition.

The match, played in Chester, carried major significance for both counties, with each side still chasing a possible semi-final place as the best-performing runner-up. The scenario required a bonus-point victory and favourable results elsewhere, adding extra pressure and excitement to an already important fixture.

Despite the final scoreline, Cumbria made a strong and energetic start to the contest. Cheshire opened the scoring early, but Cumbria quickly responded with an impressive attacking move. Kendal’s Ben O’Halloran delivered a well-placed chip over the defence which was collected by Carlisle RFC full-back Lewis Tingey, who powered through defenders to score Cumbria’s opening try. Ryan Scott successfully added the conversion.

Cumbria briefly took control of the game after another well-worked attacking move involving Jack Gaskell and Will Addyman pushed them into a 14-5 lead. However, Cheshire’s attacking quality soon became evident as they responded with a series of fast-paced tries to regain momentum.

Keswick’s Ben Clark crossed for Cumbria before half-time, but Cheshire entered the break with a commanding 31-19 advantage after capitalising on defensive lapses and clinical finishing.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Cumbria continuing to battle hard and create opportunities while Cheshire maintained their attacking dominance. Additional tries from Gaskell and debutant John Swallow highlighted Cumbria’s determination, but Cheshire’s pace and finishing power ultimately proved too strong.

Swallow’s debut was viewed as a positive sign for the future, with the Kendal player progressing through Cumbria’s rugby development system before reaching senior county level. He made his first appearance alongside fellow debutant Jack Shannon of Hawcoat Park.

Following the match, long-serving county figure Dan Bowman received a Recognition of Long Service Award in acknowledgement of his contribution to Cumbrian rugby over many years.

Bowman praised the efforts of the squad despite the defeat, highlighting the importance of introducing younger players into county rugby and strengthening the future of the game within Cumbria.

The Bill Beaumont County Championship remains one of England’s most respected county rugby union competitions, featuring teams from across the country competing for regional and national honours.
