Cumbria Edge Staffordshire in Thriller to Reach NCCA Trophy Semi-Finals
Cumbria County Cricket Club clinched a nerve racking one wicket win over Staffordshire in the quarterfinals of the NCCA NV Play Trophy, securing a coveted place in the competition’s last four.
After winning the toss at Deenside, returning captain Michael Slack chose to field first, a decision that quickly paid dividends as Cumbria’s bowlers kept Staffordshire’s opening batsmen under tight control. Despite a steady opening partnership, Cumbria gradually took charge through disciplined bowling and sharp fielding performances.
The breakthrough came when Freddie Fallows dismissed Samuel Kelsall, triggering a collapse in Staffordshire’s middle order. Ben Walkden played a key role, removing several of the visitors’ leading run-scorers, while Louis Backhouse produced an outstanding spell, claiming four wickets and helping restrict Staffordshire to 138.
Chasing a modest target, Cumbria appeared to be in control early on but soon found themselves in trouble as wickets fell at regular intervals. Reduced to 32 for four, the hosts faced mounting pressure with rain threatening to influence the outcome through the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.
The match turned on a resilient partnership between captain Slack and Max Winskill. The pair steadied the innings and gradually rebuilt the chase, adding 83 runs for the sixth wicket. Winskill contributed a valuable 42, while Slack anchored the innings with a patient 43.
Even after the partnership was broken, Cumbria still faced a tense finish. With only a handful of runs required and wickets running out, Staffordshire sensed an opportunity to snatch victory.
However, Backhouse once again proved decisive. Remaining calm under pressure, he struck the winning boundary in the closing stages to seal a dramatic victory by one wicket with more than two overs remaining.
The result sends Cumbria into the semi-finals, where they will face Cheshire later this month, while also providing a major boost ahead of their upcoming National Counties T20 Cup fixtures.
