Century Heroes Lead Cleator and Workington to Dramatic Higson Cup Victories
Cleator and Workington booked their places in the next stage of the Higson Cup after impressive performances in Sunday’s delayed first-round ties.
The standout performers were club professionals Dilan Jayalath and Vishva Chathuranga, both of whom struck commanding centuries to inspire their teams to victory.
At the JD Campbell Memorial Ground, Cleator edged out Keswick in a dramatic Duckworth-Lewis finish. Batting first after being put in, Cleator posted 219-6 from 45 overs, thanks largely to Jayalath’s explosive 104 from just 85 balls. His innings featured six boundaries and seven sixes, while skipper Doug Hughes added valuable support with 25 runs.
Keswick’s bowlers struggled with discipline, conceding 26 wides, although Nisala Tharaka and Finn Turnbull each claimed two wickets.
In reply, Keswick started strongly with Glen Weightman scoring 51 and Will Atkinson contributing 30 in an opening stand of 88. Rain interruptions later revised the target, leaving the visitors narrowly short as they finished on 199-8 just one run behind the required total. Turnbull added 22 late in the innings, while Jayalath also impressed with the ball, taking 3-31.
The second tie proved less competitive as Workington dominated Dalton with a powerful batting display. Chathuranga smashed 136 off 104 deliveries, striking 12 fours and seven sixes to help his side reach 284-7 from their allotted overs.
He shared important partnerships with Matty Lowden and Kieran Hull, while Matthew Gorley added quick runs late in the innings with a rapid 36 from only 12 balls.
Dalton struggled to keep pace with the demanding target despite contributions from Rob Jones and professional Vaibhav Bhatt. Callum Leach provided some resistance with a quickfire 42, but Dalton were eventually bowled out for 138 in 34.3 overs.
Matthew Reed claimed four wickets for Workington, while Lowden added three as the visitors secured a comfortable victory to advance in the competition.
