Barrow Raiders Launch Championship Campaign with Commanding Win Over Workington Town
The Barrow Raiders started their 2026 rugby league Championship season in emphatic style, posting a 40–0 victory over local rivals Workington Town at the Northern Competitions Stadium on Sunday.
In challenging conditions, with a heavy pitch testing both teams, the Raiders showcased their experience in the second‑tier competition while Town newly promoted from Betfred League One struggled to find rhythm against their more seasoned opponents.
Barrow drew first blood midway through the opening quarter when Joe Bullock powered over for the opening try, converted by Brad Walker. Barrow continued to build pressure and extended their lead through Gregg Richards’ try just before half‑time, again converted by Walker, who also added a penalty to make it 14–0 at the break.
Town showed resilience, but Barrow’s dominance increased after the interval, with Ellis Archer crashing over early in the second half and multiple further tries from Ellis Robson, Curtis Teare and a late touchdown set up by Archer. Walker’s continued accuracy with the boot ensured Barrow ran out comfortable victors.
The silence in the Workington camp was noticeable, with Town’s forward effort insufficient to breach Barrow’s defensive discipline. The heavy defeat gives Barrow a significant morale boost at the start of the campaign and marks them as early play‑off contenders in the Championship.
The comprehensive win also sparked conversation among fans, with some Workington supporters praising their team’s effort despite the scoreline and acknowledging the step‑up in competition at Championship level.
