£4 Million Funding Package Approved for Tour de France Return to Cumbria
A funding package worth more than £4 million has been approved to help deliver stages of the 2027 Tour de France in Cumbria, marking a significant step in preparations for the prestigious race’s return to the United Kingdom.
The decision was made during the first annual general meeting of the Cumbria Combined Authority, where members agreed to provide financial backing for the event. The authority is expected to share the funding commitment with Cumberland Council and Westmorland & Furness Council.
The men’s Tour de France is scheduled to begin in Edinburgh on July 2, 2027, with the opening stage finishing in Carlisle. The following day, riders will depart from Keswick, travelling through the Lake District and Lancashire before ending the stage in Liverpool.
Officials estimate that hosting the race could generate close to £50 million in visitor spending across the county, providing a substantial boost to local businesses, tourism operators, and hospitality venues.
Authority members were told that the proposed funding totals approximately £4.05 million, with a detailed business case expected later this year. Additional contingency funding of up to £100,000 may also be made available if costs exceed current projections.
A report presented to the authority highlighted the global significance of the event, noting that the Tour de France will return to the UK for the first time since 2014 and is expected to be one of the largest international sporting events hosted in the country since the London 2012 Olympics.
Local leaders believe the investment will help showcase Cumbria’s landscapes to a worldwide audience while delivering long-term economic benefits for communities across the region.
