Ukraine Strikes Major Russian Oil Refinery Hours After Trump Meeting

Ukraine launched long range strikes against two major Russian oil refineries shortly after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's meeting with Donald Trump in Washington.

According to Ukrainian officials, overnight drone and missile attacks targeted oil refineries in Ryazan and Perm, both considered strategically important to Russia's fuel production and military logistics. The strikes reportedly caused significant fires and disrupted operations at both facilities.

The two refineries have a combined annual processing capacity of around 220 million barrels of crude oil, making them among Russia's most important energy assets. Ukrainian officials said the operation formed part of their continuing campaign to weaken Russia's ability to finance and sustain the war through energy exports.

The attacks took place only hours after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met US President Donald Trump in Washington, where the Ukrainian leader sought additional military assistance, including increased supplies of Patriot air defence missiles and closer defence industry cooperation.

Ukraine has intensified its deep strike campaign throughout 2026, increasingly targeting critical refinery components rather than fuel storage alone. Military analysts believe this strategy causes longer lasting operational disruption by damaging equipment that is difficult and time consuming to replace.

Russian authorities acknowledged fires at the affected facilities while emergency crews worked to contain the damage. Ukraine has not disclosed the exact weapons used but officials said domestically developed long range drones continue to play a key role in these operations.

The strikes are part of a broader Ukrainian strategy aimed at reducing Russia's refining capacity and limiting fuel supplies available for military operations. Recent attacks have increasingly focused on energy infrastructure, logistics centres, radar systems, and military support facilities far inside Russian territory.

The latest operation highlights Ukraine's growing long range strike capability while underlining the strategic importance of energy infrastructure in the continuing conflict. Both sides continue to intensify military operations as diplomatic efforts to end the war remain uncertain.
