Todd Blanche Secures Key Republican Support Ahead Of Senate Confirmation Vote

06 Aug 2026 Todd Blanche Secures Key Republican Support Ahead Of Senate Confirmation Vote

Todd Blanche met privately with two influential Republican senators as he seeks crucial backing before the Senate votes on his nomination as Attorney General.

Blanche held separate meetings with Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, both of whom have yet to publicly confirm whether they will support his nomination. Their votes are viewed as critical as Republicans attempt to secure enough support for confirmation.

The meetings come after Blanche's nomination narrowly advanced through the Senate Judiciary Committee, following assurances that the controversial $1.8 billion Anti Weaponization Fund would be permanently scrapped. Those commitments persuaded several Republican holdouts to back him at committee stage.

Despite that progress, Blanche's path to confirmation remains uncertain. Republican Senator Susan Collins has already announced she will oppose the nomination, leaving Blanche with little room to lose additional Republican votes in the full Senate.

Democrats continue to oppose Blanche, arguing his close ties to President Donald Trump could undermine the independence of the Department of Justice. They have also questioned whether the Anti Weaponization Fund could be revived in the future despite Blanche's assurances.

Blanche has repeatedly stated that, if confirmed, he would uphold the rule of law and lead the Justice Department independently. He has rejected suggestions that political considerations would influence his decisions as Attorney General.

Senate Republican leaders are hoping to hold a confirmation vote before the upcoming congressional recess. The outcome is expected to depend largely on the decisions of the remaining undecided Republican senators following their discussions with Blanche.
