Michelle Scrogham talks local town culture and 2028 bids
Labour MP Michelle Scrogham has highlighted the importance of local identity and culture as communities across the UK compete for the prestigious Town of Culture 2028 title.
Speaking about the initiative, she emphasised that towns like Barrow and surrounding areas have a rich cultural heritage that deserves national recognition. She pointed out that local traditions, arts, and community spirit are key strengths that can help shape a compelling bid.
The UK Town of Culture programme aims to celebrate towns that demonstrate strong cultural engagement and creativity. It also provides funding and opportunities to boost tourism, local pride, and economic development.
Scrogham noted that preparing a bid is not just about winning the title, but about bringing communities together and encouraging long-term cultural investment. She encouraged local organisations, artists, and residents to get involved in showcasing what makes their town unique.
She also stressed that cultural initiatives can play a vital role in regeneration helping towns grow socially and economically while preserving their identity.
As the 2028 competition approaches, towns are working to develop strong proposals that highlight their creative strengths, heritage, and future vision. Scrogham expressed optimism that with the right collaboration and enthusiasm, local areas can put forward a bid that truly reflects their character and ambition.
